I have a weakness for a good mind. Curiosity, perspective, someone who has paid enough attention to life to have interesting things to say about it. I’m thoughtful about where I spend my time and who I spend it with, too. But I also think there comes a point when good judgmént has done its job—and you’re allowed to simply enjoy what you found.

I’m naturally curious, quietly affectionate, and probably a little more playfúl than I first appear. I can happily disappear into a conversation about something I knew nothing about an hour ago, remember the small thing you mentioned in passing, and still become completely distracted by a great song, something ridiculous happening at the next table, or the sudden realization that we should have ordered dessért.

I appreciate beautiful places, but I’m much more interested in what happens when the setting stops mattering. When dinner runs long because neither of us noticed the time. When the conversation gets better after we’ve abandoned whatever started it. When a look across the table says something neither of us neéds to explain. I like that point when two people stop being quite so deliberate with each other and simply start enjoying where they are.

Maybe that’s the balance I’m drawn to: enough substance to keep us interested, enough ease to let our guard down, and just enough temptation to make whatever we thought we were doing next feel considerably less important.

We can be sensible again tomorrow.
