After more than a decade in this work, I sometimes wonder how different my life would have been without the people I’ve met.

Founders, investors, entrepreneurs, physicians. I’ve heard stories of companies going public, spectacular failures, acquisitions, and triumphs that took twenty years to achieve.

Those conversations changed how I thought about my own life. Eventually, I became a California real estate investor myself. Not because anyone handed me a strategy, but because years of listening to people who understood money, risk, and opportunity changed how I approached them.

I like to think I’ve learned something from nearly everyone I’ve met.

Perhaps that’s what I love most about this work: meeting people whose experiences are entirely different from mine.

I don’t mean curiosity in the polite, “What do you do?” sense. I want to know why. How did you convince your first investor? What happened after you sold your company? What would you do differently?

Give me an unfamiliar industry or an interesting company, and I’ll happily spend hours reading about it.

If you share your LinkedIn before we meet, don’t be surprised if I’ve researched your company or arrived with questions about something you accomplished ten years ago.

Not because I feel obligated to make conversation. I genuinely want to know.

People become infinitely more interesting when you stop asking what they do and start asking how they became who they are.
